What is hot isostatic pressing

March 03,2023

Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is a process production technology that integrates high temperature and high pressure.

The heating temperature is usually 1000-2000 ℃. It is to place the product in a closed container, fill the container with inert gas, and apply isotropic pressure and high temperature to the product at the same time. Under the action of high temperature and high pressure, the workpiece to be processed is pressed evenly in all directions, and the product can be sintered and densified. Therefore, the processed products have high density, good uniformity and excellent performance. At the same time, the technology has the characteristics of short production cycle, less processes, low energy consumption, and low material consumption.

Hot isostatic pressing is an indispensable means for the production of high-performance materials and the development of new materials. Hot isostatic pressing can be used for direct powder forming. The powder is put into the sheath (similar to the mold function). The sheath can be made of metal or ceramic (low carbon steel, Ni, Mo, glass, etc.), and then nitrogen and argon are used as the pressure medium to make the powder directly heated and sintered; Or heat-densify the molded castings including aluminum alloy; titanium alloy; high-temperature alloy and other shrinkage cavity. After hot isostatic pressing treatment, the castings can achieve 100% densification and improve the overall mechanical properties of the castings. For metal materials, the reason why the hot isostatic pressing technology can achieve densification and eliminate defects is that the strength of metal materials is extremely low and the plasticity is excellent at high temperatures, and the metal in the hole area is plastically deformed by the external gas pressure, and the metal in the hole area is plastically deformed. Metallurgical structure occurs in mutual contact and voids disappear.

The related metals used for hot isostatic pressing mainly include titanium alloy, superalloy, powder steel, cemented carbide, cermet, etc.
