What are the common powder milling processes

March 03,2023

According to the relevant data analysis reports, the application of metal materials will increase year by year, and the R&D and production of metal materials will have a broader market space. The common milling processes include PA, VIGA, PREP, GA, PS, etc. Next, we will introduce some milling production processes.

1、 Plasma atomization (PA)

Plasma atomization refers to the technology of injecting solid particles into the inert gas plasma, making them completely evaporate under the high temperature of the plasma and exist in the form of steam, and then using gas quenching cooling technology for rapid cooling, so that the saturated steam can rapidly condense, nucleate and grow to form ultra-fine powder. The powder formed by plasma atomization has high sphericity and is not prone to produce component segregation.

Compared with other methods, the powder atomized by plasma is finer. Plasma atomization process is a unique process for producing active metal spherical powder. There is no other process can produce spherical micropowders with an average particle size of 40 μm. titanium powder with an average size of 150 μm can be produced by rotating electrode atomization. As the plasma atomized powder is relatively fine, the parts produced by it will have excellent physical and mechanical properties.

2、 Vacuum nebulization (VIGA)

The working principle of vacuum atomization is to melt metals and metal alloys under the condition of vacuum and gas protection. The metal liquid flows down through the heat preservation crucible and the diversion nozzle. The metal liquid is atomized and broken into a large number of fine droplets by high-pressure air flow through the nozzle .

Vacuum gas atomization powder milling has the following characteristics: it can prepare most of the metal and alloy powders that cannot be produced in the air and water atomization method; Spherical powder can be prepared; Due to the rapid solidification without segregation, many special alloy powders can be prepared; the powder particle size can reach a required range by adjusting the appropriate process,.

3、 Aerosol (GA)

The basic principle of gas atomization is to impact the metal melt with high-speed airflow, and convert the kinetic energy of the gas into the surface energy of the metal melt through collision, so that the molten metal flow is broken into fine droplets, and then rapidly cooled and solidified in the airflow atmosphere to form powder.

The master alloy raw material undergoes three main processes in the process of gas atomization powder milling: melting, atomization and solidification. At present, the mainstream atomization process is carried out in vacuum or inert gas environment to reduce the oxygen content and impurity content in the powder and improve the purity of the powder.

Relevant metal powders include iron, aluminum, copper, silver, etc
